How to remove security on a PDF in order to edit a PDF file

eTapestry added a security feature to PDF files that you generate within the database. When you download a file in the PDF format and want to make changes using either Adobe Acrobat or attempt to open the PDF file in Microsoft word to make changes, you will be prevented from doing so because of the security that we have added to the generated PDF files. This change was implemented so that PDFs that were generated by eTapestry could be sent to Constituents and prevent a person's ability to alter information such as tax deductible amounts.

We do suggest that you attempt to alter the templates in eTapestry so that you can generate PDFs that do not need to be edited. However, there are times when you may still want to make alterations to the generated files. Using Google Chrome, there is a method that allows you to resave PDFs that were generated from eTapestry without the security of the original files.
You must first generate the PDF file that you need using eTapestry.

This initial file will have the security features enabled.

Using the steps below, you can open the file in Google Chrome and use the Save as PDF printer option to resave the PDF file and remove the security:
  1. Open your Google Chrome browser
  2. Press Ctrl + O on a PC or ⌘ + O on a Mac
  3. In the Open File menu, find your downloaded PDF file and click it to highlight it
  4. Click Open
  5. Press Ctrl + P on a PC or ⌘ + P on a Mac to bring up the Printer menu
  6. Click the Change button in the Destination menu to change the Printer destination
  7. Click on the Save as PDF option
  8. Click the Save button in the upper left corner of the Print menu
  9. Choose the location on your computer that you would like to save the PDF file
  10. Click Save
The PDF file that you saved using the Save to PDF option in Chrome will be in the location that you saved it and that file will not have the security features from the eTapestry generated file.
