eTapestry is not currently capable of truly randomized A/B Testing. Instead, we'll use the Account Number field in eTapestry to divide up your original list into two segments.

For example, imagine your database contains 5,000 accounts that you want to divide into two halves, so that you can send out slightly different variations of an email newsletter. We can create two separate queries to divide the list; the first query will find accounts numbered 1-2,500, while the second will find accounts numbered 2,501-5,000.

Query 1: Accounts 1-2,500
  1. Click the Queries button on the menu bar
  2. Click Manage Queries
  3. Select a category that you want to store this query in (Ex: Base)
  4. Click New Query under the Tasks menu
  5. Name the query “Accounts numbered 1-2,500”
  6. Set the Starting Query to Base: All Constituents – A
  7. Set the Data Return Type to Accounts
  8. Select Match Each Criteria under the Criteria Matching field
  9. Select Account from the Browse Fields drop down menu and click Account Number
  10. Fill in Less Than or Equal To 2500; leave the Optional Comparison set to None Selected
  11. Click Save And – Preview

Query 2: Accounts 2,501-5,000
  1. Click the Queries button on the menu bar
  2. Click Manage Queries
  3. Select a category that you want to store this query in (Ex: Base)
  4. Click New Query under the Tasks menu
  5. Name the query “Accounts numbered 2,501 and above”
  6. Set the Starting Query to Base: All Constituents – A
  7. Set the Data Return Type to Accounts
  8. Select Match Each Criteria under the Criteria Matching field
  9. Select Account from the Browse Fields drop down menu and click Account Number
  10. Fill in Greater Than or Equal To 2501; leave the Optional Comparison set to None Selected
  11. Click Save And – Preview

You can then use each query to send out a separate email in eTapestry, if you have two different versions of your email newsletter created in the Communications section. For information about how to send an email, see How to send a Basic Mass Email or How to send an Advanced Mass Email.
