Error: Relationship phones cannot be marked as primary - committing a constituent batch with an individual record that has a constituent organization relationship with phone marked primary

When entering phones in a constituent batch, adding a organization relationship with a phone marked primary on an individual record causes an error message (if a non-constituent org relationship) or the record to except out at the batch commit (if a constituent org relationship).
 
For Organization Relationships of individuals, the relationship-specific phones represent the method(s) of contact for that organization in the context of the relationship (such as a business email address or work phone number). Because a primary phone or email is the main point of contact for the organization itself, it cannot be stored on an individual's relationship to an organization.

If the organization relationship requires a primary phone number, add the phone number to the organization's constituent record (and add a constituent record for the organization if needed), where it will display on the relationship as well.

Steps to Duplicate

In sample RE 7.95:
1. Go to Batch and start a new constituent batch

2. On Fields tab, add the following fields:
  • Key Indicator
  • Last Name
  • Org Name
  • Individual relationship > Last Name
  • Organization  relationship > Org Name
  • Organization relationship > Phone is Primary (This add Phone number and Phone type too.)

3. Click Data Entry.

4. In the batch, enter test record tabbing across the row:
  • Key Indicator = Individual
  • Last Name = ABC
  • Organization name = AAA Concrete
  • Mark box in Organization Relation Phone is Primary?
  • Enter 808-555-1466 in Organization Relation Phone number
  • Select Business in Organization Relation Phone type
5. Error occurs: Relationship phones cannot be marked as primary.
6. Unmark box in Organization Relation Phone is Primary?
7. In Organization Relationship Org Name, click the binoculars and search for AAA Concrete
8. Mark Organization Relation Phone is Primary?
9. Tab across row and down to next row.
10. Go to File > Commit. Mark options to to Validate and Create control report (Preview).
11. Click Commit Now.
12. Click Commit Now.
13. On Commit Complete screen, click Exception Report.  Reason for Exception will be Relationship phones cannot be marked as primary.

Note: This only occurs adding an organization relationship to an individual record. The following combinations (constituent or non-constituent relationship) do not cause this message/exception
  • Individual constituent with Individual relationship.
  • Organization constituent with Individual relationship.
  • Organization constituent with Organization relationship.
