How to account for or handle a deposit in transit

When reconciling the bank, there may be certain months where part of a deposit has already been cleared, but the entire sum hasn't actually cleared the bank yet. When marking the deposit record as cleared, this may cause the bank register and/or gl cash account to be out of balance to the statement.

Steps to Duplicate

After marking the deposit as cleared, create a bank adjustment in the opposite direction to wash out that portion of the deposit this month that has not yet cleared. In the next month, create a bank adjustment in the opposite direction to reinstate the money once it does clear. If the General Ledger cash account needs to be affected as well, post the adjustments as well. Alternatively, mark each of the bank adjustments with a post status of do not post (if the gl cash will come back into balance in the next month).

1. Create a bank adjustment in the bank register during the reconciliation month for the amount that still needs to be cleared to bring the out of balance back to $0.

*If the Bank is out of balance by a Negative amount > Create a Deposit Adjustment
- ($) -> $/0
**If the Bank is out of balance by a Positive Amt > Create a Payment Adjustment
- +$ -> $/0

2. Post to the General Ledger if desired or set the post status to do not post
3. In the next month, create an opposite adjustment for the same amount
4. Post to the General Ledger if the previous adjustment was posted or set the post status to do not post again.
