Error: Subquery returned more than 1 value. When sending emails via BBIS.

When sending email via BBIS, users may receive the error: Subquery returned more than 1 value. This is not permitted when the subquery follows =, !=, <, <= , >, >= or when the subquery is used as an expression.
The statement has been terminated. This is typically caused by duplicate information on the constituent record. For example, two primary email addresses.

This message has been returned in two scenarios:

  • Constituent record has two email addresses marked as Primary
  • Constituent record has two Primary business relationships
This cannot always be determined through the UI, but is evident in the back-end tables.  The UI has logic and validation rules in place to prevent these types of scenarios, which often occur as a result of one of the following:
  • Data Conversion issue
  • Customization
  • Data altered by prior, unrelated bug
To address this issue requires access to a local copy of the data for debugging purposes, and may be billable if related to Data Conversions of Customizations that are outside of warranty.

Steps to Duplicate

1. Create an email from BBIS
2. Add the problem constituent to the recipients list.
3. Submit the email
4. Notice that the job fails with the error: Subquery returned more than 1 value.
