Online Express membership direct debit transactions added to batch as Cash gifts rather than Recurring Gifts (UK)

When a member completes an online membership form and selects direct debit, the batch created by the downloaded transaction sets the gift type as Cash rather than Recurring gift.  A Recurring Gift is required in the UK for direct debits to be included in batch when automatically generating transactions / payments to be processed by BACS.
We are currently evaluating this issue and will update this article when we have more information. In the meantime, we suggest the following steps:
  1. Open the batch created when the Online Express membership transaction is downloaded and
    • Click into the row with the related gift with the pay method Direct Debit and change the gift type to Recurring gift
    • While still in that row select Gift > Instalment Information and change the recurring gift schedule as required.  For example, if an annual recurring gift to be collected on the 1st October every year then change the Frequency from Monthly to Annually; change "On" to October 1 and change "Starting on" to 1st October then click Preview to ensure 1st transaction is correct

Steps to Duplicate

  1. Create a membership form and select the option to allow direct debits
  2. When a member completes the form and selects to pay by direct debit them the gift in the batch that is created when the transaction is downloaded has the gift type Cash rather than the gift type Recurring Gift.  When the batch containing the Cash gift is committed a cash gift is added to the member constituent record, but no money has been received.  Also, because the gift type is Cash, this direct debit will not be included when automatically generating transactions / payments for direct debit.
  3. When a donation form is created that allows donors to select direct debits then these transactions are correctly downloaded as Recurring Gifts, therefore donation forms are not impacted on by this issue.
  4. Replicated in version 83.0.1.0 of Online Express
