What is the different between standard Contact Roles and Donor/Opportunity Contact Roles in LCRM?

In LCRM, I see reference to "Contact Roles" and also "Donation Contact Roles". What is the difference between these, and which one should I use in my record layouts?

Contact Roles are standard SalesForce functionality. However, LCRM customers should use Donation/Opportunity Contact Roles instead, because it has been optimized to allow additional features, such as allowing Partial Contact Roles, which acts as a Soft Credit option.

By default, LCRM will set the Donation Contact Role as donor, when a gift is created. This should not be changed.
