Choosing to split a payment will result in each responsible signer having their own Smart account. A Parent needs to choose Split payment in the Smart Tuition Contract options or when they first begin the contract depending on if the contract is for a subsequent child.
Once the choice is made, there is not a way to go back to the Contract and choose not to Split payment. Smart Tuition will need to merge the accounts. There are measures in place to prevent this from happening. The option to split is defaulted to no, and if a parent chooses yes, they are told that it will result in a separate account and asked if they're sure.
At this time, there is not a way to pre-set what the Split payment will be. For example, Splitting payment 80/20. The split payment is always 50/50 but can be adjusted once the accounts have been created.
Split accounts can be reduced by not allowing a split account for an individual contract. This setting is located in Core > Settings > Smart Tuition > Smart Tuition Setup. Only one Smart Family Account allowed per contract Yes/No. If this setting is changed after Contracts are generated, the original selection will be honored.
PLEASE NOTE: Even with this setting turned on, signers can still opt to have more than one account for additional children. For example: Bob and Sally are married and parents to Child A, they sign the contract and cannot elect to split their payments or set up second accounts. Bob has a contract for child B from a previous marriage, Sally should not have access to Child B's information or Smart account, therefore Bob will select to set up a separate account for child B.
