Event Show as paid in Status field or Status field does not update with expected value

You may have an event registration form in NetCommunity. The event units are free. When reviewing the participants in The Raiser's Edge, you see the Status field shows Paid. You want to know why a free event shows a status of paid.

Alternatively, you have a paid event, but the status of Paid shows unexpectedly for a guest instead of a registration or vice versa.

Alternatively, you may notice any status within this field and you want to know why it is there for either a paid or free event.
The Status field does not integrate with NetCommunity at all. If you're seeing a status on this field, it was added somehow in The Raiser's Edge. It may have been manually or through some type of batch process.
