Is Online Express compliant with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)?

Online Express continues and will continue to help Canadian organizations comply with the Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation.

How does Online Express help Canadian organizations comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)?

Online Express helps Canadian organizations comply with CASL as follows:

  • The Online Express email signup form allows users to obtain consent
  • All Online Express emails allow recipients to revoke consent
  • Online Express automatically suppresses delivery of email to recipients who have revoked consent
Organizations that opt to market to recipients for whom implied consent is still valid per CASL, would have to be proactive in their use of The Raiser's Edge to identify donors, volunteers, members, etc. for whom implied consent is still valid.

Does Online Express track if a constituent signs up for future emails?

Does Online Express send opt-out information to The Raiser's Edge?

Online Express does not automatically send opt-out information to The Raiser's Edge. This is because Online Express will automatically places the email address on an opt-out list, which is filtered out of all future email jobs until the recipient opts back in. The Constituent Appeal that is added to the Constituent record when a user clicks the Add this data to RE button in the specific email job in the Online Express plugin will track if the recipient opted out in response to the email. The information below is tracked on the email when an email address has opted out in response to a specific email:
  • Appeal Descriptions: [The subject line and date of the email job]
  • Date: [The date of the email job]
  • Response: Opted-out
  • Marketing Segment: [The selection made from the What is the purpose of this message? drop-down on the Get ready to send tab of the email]
  •  Marketing Source Code: Online Express Email
  • Comments: [The email address that was sent the mailing]
Online Express Email Job Appeal
Because this only happens if a user clicks Add this data to RE after the recipient has opted out, it is not an accurate indicator of all email addresses that opted out of Online Express emails.

How can users track opt-outs/opt-ins in The Raiser's Edge?

While Blackbaud cannot provide a "best practice" regarding how to track these recipients, many organizations use a Constituent Attribute to track this information. For step-by-step instructions regarding how to add a opt-in Constituent Attribute, please refer to How to create an opt-in email attribute in The Raiser's Edge for Canada's Anti-Spam Law (CASL)?.
