Emails do not render correctly in certain Outlook versions

When opening an email sent from Online Express in any of the following Outlook versions, some recipients may notice the email is incorrectly formatted. Namely, the social media widget is off-center, enlarged, and the padding is incorrect. Additionally, users notice that bulleted lists include an extra bullet. If a recipient opens an email in Gmail, they do not experience this behavior.
  • Outlook 2013
  • Outlook 2016
  • Outlook with at least 120 DPI configured
  • Outlook installed on Windows 10
  • Office Online
Online Express emails use media queries to render to recipients' email client and mobile devices. Outlook does not support media queries. We have evaluated potential ways to work around the limitation between Outlook and media queries and we have determined it will not be addressed in the software in its current state. This has been addressed in Email in Raiser's Edge NXT. For more information about Raiser's Edge NXT, please contact your Account Executive.

Steps to Duplicate

  1. Navigate to the OLX plugin
  2. Click the Email marketing tab
  3. Click Create new email
  4. On the Get started tab, select your desired template
  5. Click Save & Continue
  6. Drag/drop the Social media widget into the content section
  7. Configure your desired URLs
  8. Click Save & Close
  9. Drag/drop any of the content types with "text" into the content section
  10. Type a bulleted list into the content editor
  11. Click Save & Close
  12. Click Save & Continue
  13. Type your desired subject line in the "Subject" field
  14. Copy/paste the email markup into an email tester or send a test email to a recipient using Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016, Outlook for Mac, and Office Online (or just open the emails in one of these desktop clients).
  15. Notice that Outlook 2007, 2010, and Outlook for Mac render correctly
  16. Notice Outlook 2013 renders the Social media widget correctly, but the bulleted lists are not rendering correctly
