Error: You cannot add this item to your shopping cart. You cannot add a membership or membership renewal to a cart twice, and you cannot add a membership if you already are a member.

When attempting to add a different membership type for a constituent that is in renewal, lapsed, or expired periods (and the membership program allows for mulitple memberships), one may encounter the following error:
You cannot add this item to your shopping cart . You cannot add a membership or membership renewal to a cart twice, and you cannot add a membership if you already are a member.

The validation error is preventing a user with an expired membership outside the renewal window from purchasing a new membership at a different level.  (they are able to renew the expired membership level with no issue)

We are currently evaluating this issue for a fix in a future service pack. 

Steps to Duplicate

1.   In CRM, add a constituent that is linked to a BBIS account to the Membership program in question with the following steps:
      a.   From the constituent record, navigate to the Memberships tab. Click Add. Use the following information in the Add a membership window:
            i.   Select Paying for a membership.
            ii.  Use a date that will ensure the membership is expired.
            iii. Program: Select program in question.
                 Level:     Select level in question.
                 Term:      Select term in question.
            iv. Select Pay in full
            v.  Save. 
     b.   The expired membership now shows on the constituent record and the membership program record. Note that the program in question should allow for mutliple memberships (on the General tab), any revenue received after the renewal widow counts toward a new membership, and members are considered expired after the renewal window (Renewals tab). With this set as such, the expectation is that this constituent should now be able to add a new membership of any type from this program when signing up from the Membership form on the BBIS page.
2.   In an incognito window, navigate to your BBIS login page. Sign in as the user to which you've just added the expired membership.
3.   After logging in, navigate to the membership page in question in the same incognito window. Attempt to add a different membership type to your cart. Receive error: You cannot add this item to your shopping cart. You cannot add a membership or membership renewal to a cart twice, and you cannot add a membership if you already are a member.
