User Defined Field with Date as a data type accepts text on a personal fundraising page

I have created User Defined Fields with a data type of Date intended to use on both personal fundraising pages and DIY forms to capture birth dates in the specific desired format.  The fields on the personal fundraising forms allow for text fields.  DIY forms are working fine.  My desire is to have the fields only allow a date of dd/mm/yyyy (or mm/dd/yyyy depending upon the country).  It is accepting a written out date of December 21, 2001.

Also, not only does the User Defined Field allow for text, but then when attempting to query and report on these the fields show as blank in the query and report.
