How to determine the authentication mode for a SQL Server instance

SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014:
  1. Go to Start, Programs, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 or 2014 SQL Server Management Studio
  2. Right-click on the SQL instance the database is attached to and select Properties
  3. Highlight Security in the left-hand pane
The authentication mode is selected under Server Authentication in the right-hand pane
