How to use SQL Server Standard or Enterprise Editions instead of the Express Edition

This Knowledgebase Solution provides the steps required to use a different instance of SQL Server for your Blackbaud database instead of the SQL Server Express Edition.

  1. Before installing SQL Server, determine if the version of SQL Server you want to use is compatible with your Blackbaud software:
  1. Install SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012  or 2014 Standard or Enterprise Edition.  Please contact the appropriate software vendor or IT professional for assistance with this process or issue, which is beyond Blackbaud's scope of support.
  2. Install your Blackbaud software.
  3. Review and complete the steps on how to configure SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014 for use with Blackbaud databases
Note: If you also want to move the Blackbaud Management Console, refer to How to move to a new server.
  4. Detach the database(s) from the Blackbaud Management Console
  5. Attach or restore the database in the Blackbaud Management Console. In the Attach Database Wizard, choose the Select another SQL Server instance option on the Select Server step, then click Next.
  6. Enter the name of your SQL Server instance or Select the name from your available SQL Server instances, enter/select the appropriate Login information for SQL Server, and click Next.
  7. Complete the Attach Database Wizard Steps 7 through 10 in How to attach or restore a database to the Blackbaud Management Console (includes video)
  8. Review and complete the steps on how to configure SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2014 for use with Blackbaud databases
Note: Once you have verified that users are able to log into the software and there are no other databases using the instance of SQL Server, SQL Server Express can be uninstalled.
