Backup fails in the Blackbaud Management Console (SQL Server)

When trying to run a manual or scheduled backup in the Blackbaud Management Console (BMC), the job fails.

Try each of the following steps in order until the error is resolved:

  1. Check the amount of free space on the hard drive where backups are created to ensure there is enough free space for the backup.
  2. Remove any special characters or spaces from the backup directory path and run the backup again.
  3. Unregister and re-register the SQLDMO.dll file located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\
  4. If the database was ever detached and re-attached to the Blackbaud Management Console, all scheduled tasks are removed. Reschedule the backup.
  5. Backup the database to a local drive, instead of an external or remote drive.
  6. Backup the database to the root of a local drive, such as C:\.
  7. Verify the backup schedule is correctly set up in the Blackbaud Management Console. Refer to How to schedule a backup through the Blackbaud Management Console for instructions.
  8. If using RE_EXPRESS or FE_EXPRESS, verify the SYSTEM account has FULL control permissions to the destination folder where the backup is to be created.  If using your own SQL Server instance, ensure that the Windows account running the SQL Server service and the SQL Server Agent services has FULL control permissions to the backup destination folder.
  9. Ensure the appropriate services are started.
    1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and confirm the following services are Started:
      • RE_EXPRESS - The Raiser's Edge Express version
      • FE_EXPRESS - The Financial Edge Express version
      • SQL SERVER AGENT - All SQL Server Standard/Enterprise versions
    2. If a service is not started, right-click the service name and select Start
  10. Confirm the start-up type for the services listed above is set to Automatic
    1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services
    2. Locate and right-click on the service and select Properties
    3. Verify the Startup type listed on the General tab is Automatic. If not, change it to Automatic and click Apply.
      Note: Setting the SQL Server Agent service to Automatic must be done manually, and once set will ensure that the service will start up after rebooting the server.
  11. If a server was abnormally stopped (e.g. from a power outage, etc.), do the following:
    1. Open the Blackbaud Management Console
    2. Detach the database. Click Yes when prompted to remove all existing jobs.
    3. Re-attach the database
    4. Reschedule the backup
  12. If the issue persists and you are using an Express database engine, refer to Scheduled and manual Blackbaud Management Console maintenance tasks fail.
