Note: Incorrect changes to registry settings can cause serious system problems that may be irreversible without reinstallation of the operating system. You must back up your registry before making any registry changes. We are not responsible for damage resulting from incorrect use of the Registry Editor.

  1. Download MSI_Reg_Key.exe to the local hard drive of the machine having the installation issues.
  2. Double-click MSI_REG_KEY.EXE and when prompted, unzip the files to the Desktop of the workstation. MSI_REG_KEY.EXE is a self-extracting zip file that contains the files: REGISTRY_INSTALL_LOG.reg and Remove_REGISTRY_INSTALL_LOG.reg.
  3. Back up the Registry.
  4. Import REGISTRY_INSTALL_LOG.REG into the registry by double-clicking it.
  5. Click Start, Run and type %temp% at the Run command prompt. Click OK.
  6. Delete all MSI*.LOG files found in the directory that opens.
  7. Re-run the Blackbaud software installation that rolls back.
  8. After the installation fails and the rollback is complete, open the TEMP directory again, as done in step 5.
  9. Locate the MSI*.LOG file(s).
  10. Open the file(s) and search for Return Value 3. The error that caused the rollback with be directly above Return Value 3. Use this information to search Blackbaud's Knowledgebase for possible solutions.
  11. You can also use this information to search other Web sites, such as Google or Microsoft, for other possible resolutions.
  12. If a resolution is not found, Contact Support and reference this article.  and place a zipped copy of the MSI log file(s) in your FTP folder.
  13. Double-click Remove_REGISTRY_INSTALL_LOG.reg to remove the registry key that was imported in step 4.
