Note : Before you proceed with the following instructions, back up the database. If your organization integrates multiple Blackbaud products, refer to the Additional Requirements section of the backup article. Read all instructions and review the following information prior to proceeding:

Follow these steps to either update The Education Edge SQL Server versions 7.20 and higher or install it for the first time on either a network or standalone computer. For standalone installations, skip step 5.

If you are running both The Education Edge and The Financial Edge, you only need to install the latest version for one product. If your desktop icon says The Education Edge, we recommend downloading and installing The Education Edge (and vice versa). Otherwise, the icon may change to The Financial Edge (or vice versa).

  1. Download the Latest Version
Download the latest version to the server or standalone workstation. (If you have a CD, proceed to step 2.)

  2. Update or Install The Education Edge
Ensure you have local administrator rights to the server or standalone workstation. Double-click the setup.exe file located in the extracted folder (typically called 'Install') to start the installation wizard, and then follow the prompts. (If using a CD, place it in the CD-ROM drive, and the installation wizard automatically opens.)

We recommend accepting the default locations for the program files and Deploy folder. (The Deploy folder is created for network installations only.)

Note:  If updating do not extract the contents of the file into the Deploy folder, the Deploy folder is updated during the process and all files in it will be replaced with new files.

  3. Update, Attach, Create, or Migrate the Database
    • If you are updating from one SQL Server version to another and:
      • Are installing a patch, proceed to step 4.
      • Are not installing a patch, log into The Education Edge on the server to update the database.
NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2), then right-click on The Education Edge shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the installation/update For more information, see the Installation Article for those systems.
    • Otherwise, open the Blackbaud Management Console and select the appropriate option:
      • Attach an existing database: Use this option if you are:
        • Installing a new server or standalone and already have an Education Edge database
        • Converting from another software program and we are performing the conversion for you (We will send you the database file when the conversion is complete.)
      • Migrate an existing database: Use this option ONLY if you are migrating a database from ASA (version 7.1 and prior) or version 6.
      • Create a new database. Use this option if you are:
        • Installing a new server or standalone and you don't have an existing Education Edge database. (This only applies if you are new to The Education Edge.)
        • Adding another database (This requires and additional purchase.

  4. Download and Install the Latest Patch

NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2), then right-click on The Education Edge shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the patch installation.  For more information see the Installation Article for those systems.

  5. Install or Update the Workstations (Network Version Only)

This must be done on each workstation.  NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8), then right-click on The Education Edge shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the installation/updateFor more information see the Installation Article for those systems.
