You can define overlapping meetings using patterns or course scheduling restrictions.

  1. Patterns

You can create overlapping meeting times in patterns to accommodate the need for overlapping periods. The key to whether you can define patterns by period or time is the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox on the Periods tab of the timetable.

    • Defining overlapping meetings by period

If you define a timetable with the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox marked, the patterns you associate with the timetable are restricted to full periods.
      1. In Configuration - Registrar Setup, select Timetables from the list on the left.

      2. Click New Timetable on the action bar.

      3. On the Periods tab, mark the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox.

      4. Define the timetable as appropriate, and click Save and Close.

      5. Select Patterns from the list on the left.

      6. Note that when you create a new pattern, the columns available on each block's screen are Cycle Day, Period, and Length in Periods.

You can define a meeting to last multiple periods (for example, enter 2 in the Length in Periods column), but you cannot define a meeting to overlap any period (for example, all of period 1 and part of period 2).

    • Defining overlapping meetings by time

If you define a timetable with the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox unmarked, the patterns you associate with the timetable are not restricted to full periods.
      1. In Configuration - Registrar Setup, select Timetables from the list on the left.

      2. Click New Timetable on the action bar.

      3. On the Periods tab, do not mark the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox.

      4. Define the timetable as appropriate, and click Save and Close.

      5. Select Patterns from the list on the left.

      6. Note that when you create a new pattern, the columns available on each block's screen are Cycle Day, Start Time, and End Time.

        columns

With the Start Time and End Time fields, you can define a meeting to occur outside of the defined periods. For example, if the timetable defines Period 1 as 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and Period 2 as 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., your pattern block can define the first meeting as 8:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. Or, your pattern block can define the first meeting as 7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

  2. Course Scheduling Restrictions

When you define course scheduling restrictions on the Restrictions 2 tab, you can opt to restrict classes by meeting, not pattern. You can define a meeting that spans more than one period to accommodate the need for overlapping periods. The key to whether you define the meeting by length in periods or length in minutes is the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox on the Periods tab of the timetable.

    • Defining overlapping meetings by length in periods

If you define a timetable with the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox marked, you can define meetings by length in periods on the Restrictions 2 tab of the associated course records.
      1. In Configuration - Registrar Setup, select Timetables from the list on the left.

      2. Click New Timetable on the action bar.

      3. On the Periods tab, mark the Allow class meetings to occur only using periods checkbox.
