Note: Outlook information, the My Documents folder (including Desktop items), Microsoft Favorites, and other personal information, settings, and files are held in the local user's profile. Recreating a Windows profile without properly backing up that data will result in a loss of information. Contact your IT support and/or network administrator before proceeding.

To recreate a Windows user profile:

  1. Determine the name of the user whose profile will be recreated. Ensure that user is not logged in.
  2. Log into the computer as the Local Administrator, or another user with equivalent rights.
  3. Delete the Windows profile for the affected user, per the steps below, and log off.
  4. Log in as the original Windows user - a new profile, with the default Windows settings, should be created automatically.

To delete the Windows Profile:

Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003:

  1. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
  2. Switch to the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the Settings button under User Profiles. A list of local Windows profiles will appear in a new window.
  4. Highlight the appropriate user profile and click the Delete button.
  5. Click OK, when prompted, to remove the profile.

Windows Vista, 7, Server 2008:

  1. Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.
  2. On the left of the page, in the tasks pane, choose Advanced system settings.
  3. Click the Settings button under User Profiles. A list of local Windows profiles will appear in a new window.
  4. Highlight the appropriate user profile and click the Delete button.
  5. Click OK, when prompted, to remove the profile.
