Note : Before you proceed with the following instructions, back up the database. If your organization integrates multiple Blackbaud products, refer to the Additional Requirements section of the backup article.

Read all instructions and review the following information prior to proceeding:

Follow these steps to either update Blackbaud Student Information System or install it for the first time on either a network or standalone computer. For standalone installations, skip step 5.

If you are running both Blackbaud Student Information System and The Financial Edge, you only need to install the latest version for one product.

  1. Download the Latest Version

Download the latest version to the server or standalone workstation. (If you have a CD, proceed to step 2.)

  2. Update or Install Blackbaud Student Information System

Ensure you have local administrator rights to the server or standalone workstation. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation wizard, and then follow the prompts. (If using a CD, place it in the CD-ROM drive, and the installation wizard automatically opens.)

We recommend accepting the default locations for the program files and Deploy folder. (The Deploy folder is created for network installations only.)

  3. Update, Attach, Create, or Migrate the Database
    • If you are updating from one SQL Server version to another and:
      • Are installing a patch, proceed to step 4.
      • Are not installing a patch, log into Blackbaud Student Information System on the server to update the database.
NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2), then right-click on The Blackbaud Student Information System shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the installation/update.  For more information, see Knowledgebase Solution BB444536.

      • Otherwise, open the Blackbaud Management Console and select the appropriate option:
        • Attach an existing database: Use this option if you are:
          • Installing a new server or standalone and already have a Blackbaud Student Information System database
          • Converting from another software program and we are performing the conversion for you (We will send you the database file when the conversion is complete.)

          • Migrate an existing database: Use this option if you are migrating a database from version 6.

          • Create a new database. Use this option if you are:
            • Installing a new server or standalone and you don't have an existing Blackbaud Student Information System database. (This only applies if you are new to Blackbaud Student Information System.)
            • Adding another database (This requires and additional purchase. For more information, refer to BB58688.)

            • Download and Install the Latest Cumulative Patch

Download and install the latest cumulative patch. Then, log into Blackbaud Student Information System on the server to update the database.
NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2), then right-click on The Blackbaud Student Information System shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the patch installation.  For more information, see Knowledgebase Solution BB444536.

            • Install or Update the Workstations (Network Version Only)

Exit and sign out of all programs, especially Microsoft Outlook, and disable any anti-virus software on the workstation. Ensure you have local administrator rights to the workstation.  Log into Blackbaud Student Information System on each workstation to update the program files.
NOTE:  If using an operating system that has User Account Control (UAC) enabled (i.e., Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1), then right-click on The Blackbaud Student Information System shortcut and select "Run as administrator" the first time you attempt to log in after the installation.  For more information, see Knowledgebase Solution BB444536.

Note: If the update does not begin or if you are installing a new workstation, manually install or update the workstation by running Setup.exe from the Deploy folder on the server.
