When data is entered on a specific tab of a record (i.e. the Attributes tab), users can choose to have a red checkmark appear on that tab. This allows users to see, at a quick glance, which tabs have information included. This setting is user specific and is set within the User Options of The Raiser's Edge. However, if a specific tab is not selected in the User Options to check for data, then the red checkmark will not appear, no matter if there is data included or not.
