Solution 1

  1. Insert a second Details section
    • Right-click on Details in the gray area on the left
    • Select Insert Section Below
    • You should now have Details a and Details b
  2. Right-click on the gray area for Details a and select Format Section (Crystal 8.5) or Section Expert (Crystal XI)
  3. In the Section Expert, highlight Details a in the Sections list
  4. Go to the Color tab
  5. Mark the box next to Background Color
  6. Select the first desired background color
  7. Go to the Common tab
  8. Click the Conditional Formula button to the right of Suppress (No Drill-Down)
  9. Type the following formula in the Format Formula Editor when it appears:
         Remainder (RecordNumber,2)<>0

*This formula divides the record number by 2 and if the remainder is something other than zero (which will happen for every odd numbered record), it tells the program to suppress the section.

  10. Click Save and Close
  11. Now select Details b in the Sections list
  12. Go to the Color tab
  13. Mark the box next to Background Color
  14. Select the second desired background color
  15. Go to the Common tab
  16. Click the Conditionally Formula button to the right of Suppress (No Drill-Down)
  17. Type the following formula in the Format Formula Editor when it appears:
         Remainder(RecordNumber,2) = 0

*This formula divides the record number by 2 and if the remainder is equal to zero, it tells the program to suppress the section.

  18. Click Save and Close
  19. Click OK
  20. Create the report and make certain that the information and layout of each of the Details sections is identical. In other words, whatever objects you place in Details A should be placed into Details B as well.

Solution 2

  1. Right-click on the Details section and select "Section Expert"
  2. Click on the Color tab
  3. Click on the X+2 button for Background Color
  4. Enter the following formula:
if Remainder(RecordNumber,2) <> 0 then crRed else crWhite

         * if you would like to alternate the background color for a group header/footer section, use the following formula: if Remainder(GroupNumber,2) <> 0 then crRed else crWhite

  5. Click Save and Close
  6. Click OK on the Section Expert window
