Try each of the following steps in order until the error is resolved:

  • If installing to a server from CD:
    1. Inspect data side of the CD for scratches and/or smudges.
    2. Clean the CD using a soft lint-free cloth going straight across the CD. Do not wipe in a circular motion.
    3. Copy the contents of the CD to a folder on a local hard drive. If the error occurs when copying the CD contents:
      1. Try another CDROM drive
      2. Order replacement CD or download the installer.
    4. Run Setup.exe from the folder.
  • If installing to a workstation from the Deploy folder:
    1. Disable any AntiVirus software during the installation process
    2. Verify that the user has sufficient rights to the C: drive of the computer being installed and to the Network share where the Deploy files reside. If you are using a Windows NT or a Windows 2000 machine, you need to have administrative permissions to run an InstallShield Professional 6 setup. Refer to:
    3. If you just ran an InstallShield setup, the engine takes a few seconds at the end of the installation to clean up. During this time Ikernel.exe (the engine file) is running in memory from a previous process. That is why you are not allowed to launch another setup. Waiting a few seconds and running the setup again should resolve this.
    4. Check and make sure Ikernel.exe is not running in the Task Manager, Processes tab. If it is, and no setup is running at the time, End Task and restart the system.
    5. Ensure there is enough space to install:
      1. Delete temporary files and empty the recycle bin
      2. Check the available disk space on the server. Refer to the system requirements to determine the required amount of free disk space needed.
      3. Reboot the workstation
      4. Contact your system administrator for assistance in freeing up additional disk space
    6. Rebuild the Deploy kit on the server.
    7. Manually install the workstation by running Setup.exe from the Deploy kit on the server.
    8. Rename the following folders and then rerun the setup:
      • C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{EDC4971A-4A9F-4ABB-B7B2-E92008467015} [For Financial Edge]
      • C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3ED92977-5FCD-11D3-9293-00104BD34E29} [For Raiser's Edge 7]

Note: If you are unable to find the folder, it may be hidden. For instructions on displaying hidden folders, refer to How to display hidden files and folders (BB33769)

    9. Reboot the computer, start in Safe Mode, and attempt the installation while in Safe Mode
    10. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.x to repair any corrupted core components.
    11. Install the latest Service Pack for your Operating System. Refer to for the latest available and instructions.
    12. The other potential cause is a missing Stdole.tlb, stdole32.tlb, or stdole2.tlb file. These are core Windows files and should exist on your machine. These files may be copied from another computer running the same Operating System.
    13. Rename the C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield folder to InstallShield_OLD and rerun the installation. A new InstallShield folder will be created.

Note: If you are unable to find the folder, it may be hidden. For instructions on displaying hidden folders, refer to How to display hidden files and folders
