A record ID is user-defined, e.g. the user can create it. Examples include Constituent ID, Project ID, Student ID. It appears on the first tab of records and assists you in record-keeping. Depending on how you have your business rules set, you can define the user-defined ID when you enter the record or the program can generate it automatically (mark the Automatically generate IDs checkbox on Configuration's General tab). Not all record IDs are required by the program, for example, Constituent ID.

When you add a record, an import ID is created by the program and used in the internal database tables. You can find the import ID in the record properties.

Both types of IDs must have a unique value for each record. Depending on the type of import, the record ID or import ID is used to update existing records.
