A single slash (\) indicates a conditional break in the addressee/salutation.  When the addressee/salutation is printed it will print on two lines if there is not enough space.

Double slashes (\\) indicate a hard break in the addressee/salutation.  When the addressee/salutation is printed it will print on two lines each time.

The data after the \ will print on the next line.

Example:

Mr. William H. Smith and\ Mrs. Margaret A. Smith will print like this:

Mr. William H. Smith and

Mrs. Margaret A. Smith

Note: The backslash appears in the addressee/salutation on the constituent's record to indicate that a conditional or hard break exists. It will not show when printing labels and other mailing functions, reports, and exports.
