There are three configuration options available in Configuration, Business Rules, General:

• Proportionally based on the balance

This option calculates the balance of each record and then distributes the payment amount based on the balance proportion.

For example, Charles Smith makes a \$4000 payment and is responsible for his sons balances as well as his own.

Anthony has a balance of \$2000

David has a balance of \$1000

Charles (father) has a balance of \$1000

The system looks at each balance and calculates that Anthony will receive 50%, David will receive 25%, and Charles will receive 25% of the payment. This results in \$2000 applied to Anthony's balance, \$1000 applied to David's balance, and \$1000 applied to Charles's balance.

1. Evenly across students only

This option evenly distributes the payment across student records only and does not apply to any charges the payer owns.

Note: You can manually apply the payment to charges owned by the payer.

For example, Charles Smith makes a \$4000 payment and is responsible for his sons balances as well as his own.

Anthony has a balance of \$2000

David has a balance of \$1000

Charles (father) has a balance of \$1000

The system looks at the student records and calculates that Anthony will receive 50% and David will receive 50% of the payment. This results in \$2000 applied to Anthony's balance and \$2000 applied to David's balance leaving a balance of (\$1000). Notice the balance remains on David's record and is not applied to Charles' record.

1. Evenly across all records

This option evenly distributes the payment across all record.

For example, Charles Smith makes a \$6000 payment and is responsible for his sons balances as well as his own.

Anthony has a balance of \$2000

David has a balance of \$1000

Charles (father) has a balance of \$1000

The system will divide the total payment by the number of records and distribute the amount to each record: \$6000/3 = \$2000 for each record. This results in \$2000 applied to Anthony, David, and Charles' balance.
