Error: The database [name] has reached 3.5 gigabytes in size. SQL Express can only support databases up to 4 gigabytes - when attaching a database

You may receive the following error when attaching a database: 
The database [name] has reached 3.5 gigabytes in size. SQL Express can only support databases up to 4 gigabytes. Call Blackbaud technical support for more information.

 

Follow these steps in order:
  1. Shrink the database in the Blackbaud Management Console
  2. If the warning continues, upgrade to the full version of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise Edition
  3. If you receive this error after upgrading a named Blackbaud SQL Server Express instance (i.e., RE_Express or FE_Express) to a full version of SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2008 R2, then install a new SQL Server 2005, 2008 or 2008 R2 instance with a different name other than the named Blackbaud SQL Server Express instance and attach your database to the new SQL Server instance
