How to install or update Blackbaud software on a Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server

To ensure that your Blackbaud application (Raiser's Edge, Financial Edge, Education Edge) is installed correctly to function in a multiple user environment, you must place the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server into a special installation mode before you install the application. This special installation mode ensures that the correct registry entries and .ini files that are needed to support running the application in a multiple user environment are created during the installation process.
Before changing the mode of the Terminal Server, make sure all other users are logged off the Terminal Server (end all terminal sessions, exit all applications).  It may be necessary to reboot the terminal server as part of this process.

Note: Before you proceed with the following instructions, back up the database using the Blackbaud Management Console. If your organization integrates multiple Blackbaud products, refer to the Additional Requirements section of the backup Knowledgebase article. Please contact the appropriate software vendor or IT professional for assistance with this process, which is beyond Blackbaud's scope of support.

Using command line to Install on Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2
  1. If the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server does not host the Blackbaud Management Console and the database:
    1. Change the mode of the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server though the CMD prompt.
    2. Browse to your server's shared deploy folder and run setup.exe (not the MSI file) to install the workstation client.
  2. If the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server hosts the Blackbaud Management Console and the database:
    1. Change the mode of the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server though the CMD prompt.
    2. Browse to the folder where you extracted the installation package to and run setup.exe (not the MSI file).  Follow the instructions below for your product.

Installing on Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2

  1. If the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server does not host the Blackbaud Management Console and the database:
    1. Open the CMD prompt Type: Change Logon /disable (Prevents users from opening a new session while installing)
    2. Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2 - Open Control Panel > Programs > Install Application on Remote Desktop Server (Only visible if Remote Desktop Services Role is installed). Windows Server 2008 - Open Control Panel > Programs > Install Application on Terminal Server (Only visible if Terminal Services role is installed) Note: These instructions assume the default Category view option is selected in Control Panel.
      1. Click Next
      2. Click Browse
      3. Browse to your server's shared deploy folder and run setup.exe to install the workstation client
      4. Click Next. The Setup Status screen appears tracking the installation progress.
      5. A final screen appears telling you the installation is complete, click Finish.
    3. At a CMD prompt Type: Change Logon /enable (Allows users to open new sessions)
  2. If the Remote Desktop Server or Terminal Server hosts the Blackbaud Management Console and the database:
    1. Open the CMD prompt Type: Change Logon /disable (Prevents users from opening a new session while installing)

      1. Click Next

      4. Click Next. The Setup Status screen appears tracking the installation progress.
      5. A final screen appears telling you the installation is complete.  Select to reboot later if prompted and click Finish.
