AVS checks are provided as additional fraud protection to verify the customer billing address submitted with online transactions. When authorization transactions are received, the gateway returns a series of codes that fall into one of the levels below.

To enable AVS checks in Blackbaud products, select the AVS level in the merchant account configuration.  If you do not see an option for AVS it must be turned on by contacting your merchant account provider.

AVS Levels:
Full: Accepts transactions only when both the numeric portion of the street address and Zip code match.
Medium: Accepts transactions when either the numeric portion of the street address or Zip code match. This is the most commonly selected option.
Light: Accepts transactions when either the numeric portion of the street address or the Zip code match or when either aren't checked/verified.
None: Accepts all transactions regardless of incorrect data.

Not all banks outside of the United States support AVS.  If you have a large number of international donors you may find that their banks do not check AVS which will result in failure if your setting is above Light.
