1. In the Field Explorer window, Select Parameter fields. Clicking the + sign will display any existing parameters.
  2. Select Parameter Fields and click New.
  3. In the Create New Parameter window, enter a name for the parameter
  4. Select the value type. The options are (examples of each type are shown in parenthesis):
    • Boolean (True or False)
    • Currency ($534.12)
    • Date (03/15/2002)
    • DateTime (03/15/2002 2:49:09PM)
    • Number (12345)
    • String (text)
    • Time (2:49:09PM)
Note: If you are using an existing field (such as gift date) as the parameter and you do not know the value type, select a logical value type for the field (for example, for a date field, try DateTime). Continue with step 6 and select the appropriate table in the Browse table drop-down menu. If the appropriate field does not display, click Cancel and enter another value type. Click Set Default Values and repeat steps d and e. If not, repeat this process until the field displays.  Also note that the "List of Values" only allows "Static" to be selected.  "Dynamic" is intentionally greyed out and is not an option for parameters with the version of Crystal Reports from Blackbaud
  5. In the Value/Description box, you can enter default values and/or descriptions for your parameter.  This option allows you to limit the options accessible to other users, which can help prevent data entry error.  You can either select multiple values from a database table or enter unique values. For example, a parameter used to select certain Projects could use the Project IDs from a table.
  6. In the Options box, enter the prompt text, which is a text message that will indicate what you should do or select (for example, "Enter the subheading for the report" or "Enter Start Date").
  7. Still in the Options box, set the parameter to accept discrete values, range of values, or both. By toggling on the Discrete value(s) option button, you can select only discrete, or singular, values for your parameter field. If you have Allow multiple values toggled on, you will be able to select more than one discrete value for your parameter field.  You can also set up a default value for the parameter if desired.
  8. Click OK to save the parameter field.
