How can a Username already be taken?

When participants go to register for a Kintera Thon, they need to make a username and password. When they enter in a username, Sphere says it's already been taken. However, that username is not being shown as taken in the organization's database. 

Usernames are Sphere wide and are not on an individual organizations basis. This allows all Sphere users to enable the "autofill" function for their participants. The autofill functionality allows a participant that has a username and password for another Sphere event to re-use that information.
