Backup and Maintenance tasks fail for databases attached to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Backup and maintenance tasks, created by the Blackbaud Management Console (BMC), fail to execute even after the SQL Server 2005 Backward compatibility components are installed on the database server. Errors will also occur when running backup or maintenance tasks if SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is the first SQL instance installed on the database server.

Download and install the latest patch, which contains all fixes from previous patches. If you are running an older version, download and install the latest version and then the patch.

Alternative Solution:

These steps may be taken as a work around to allow scheduled backups to run:
(NOTE: These steps do not work for manual backups.)
  1. Set up the scheduled backup in the Blackbaud Management Console.
  2. Search the database server for the "SQLCMD.exe" and note its location.
  3. Navigate to the Blackbaud Management Console folder.
    • 32-bit default location: C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\Management Console
    • 64-bit default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackbaud\Management Console
  4. Right-click on "RE7_ScheduledBackup.cmd" (example only) and select Edit.
  5. Replace the file path C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\Management Console\bin\SQLCMD.EXE with the file path you found in Step 2.
  6. Save and close the file.
  7. Let the scheduled backup run as normal and do not launch the Scheduled backup wizard.
For manual backups, the above steps will not resolve the issue as the changes made will be overwritten when using the Manual backup wizard inside of the Blackbaud Management Console.
Follow these steps as a workaround to create manual backups:
  1. Set up the manual backup in the Blackbaud Management Console.
  2. Search the database server for the "SQLCMD.exe" and note its location.
  3. Navigate to the Blackbaud Management Console folder.
    • 32-bit default location: C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\Management Console
    • 64-bit default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackbaud\Management Console
  4. Right-click on "RE7_ManualBackup.CMD" (example only) and select Edit
  5. Replace the file path C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\Management Console\bin\SQLCMD.EXE with the file path you found in Step 2.
  6. Save and close the file
  7. Double-Click on the .CMD file to start manual backup.
For any future manual backups being run, do not launch the Manual backup wizard in the Blackbaud Management Console as it will overwrite the edited .CMD file and require that you edit the .CMD file again.  Instead of making manual backups using the Blackbaud Management Console, the RE7_ManualBackup.CMD file should be run to create the manual backup.
