Note: Before you proceed with the following instructions, back up the database. If your organization integrates multiple Blackbaud products, refer to the Additional Requirements section of the backup solution. 

1.     Create a static Constituent query  of records that need to be changed as follows:

  •  Criteria tab
    Attributes > Category > equals (the name of the category to be changed)
  • Save the query
  • Repeat for each Category being changed

2.     Create an import file  of records to be changed as follows:

  • Click on Admin > Import > Constituent > Constituent attribute > New
  • Mark Create an import file
  • Click Include selected record; browse to and select the query created in step 1
  • Browse to the desired location and enter a name for the import file
  • On the Fields tab select:
    • Attribute Import ID
    • Category
    • Comments
    • Constituent Import ID
    • Date
    • Description
  • Click Create Now
  •  Save the import
  • Repeat for each Category being changed

3.     Edit the import file to reflect the desired changes as follows:

  • Browse to and open the import file created in step 2
  • Sort the data by Category
  • Delete all rows not being affected by this change
  • Change the Category on each remaining row to the desired name
  • Save the file
  • Repeat for each Category being changed

4.     Delete the attributes  that are being changed from the constituent records as follows:

  • Click on Admin>Globally Change Records>Constituent>Constituent
  • Click Include selected records; browse to and select the query created in step 1
  • Click Constituent Attributes > Attributes
  • Operator > Delete
  • Category > select the Category name that matches the records in the selected query
  • Click Change Now
  •  Repeat for each Category being changed

5.     Import the attributes  back into the constituent records as follows:

  • Click on Admin > Import > Constituent > Constituent Attribute >New
  • Import new records
  • Browse to and select the .csv file created in step 2
  • On the Fields tab, verify the data is mapping correctly
  • On the Summary tab, we highly recommend marking Create Control Report for your records
  • Click Import Now
  • Repeat for each Category being changed

6.     Delete the attribute category   no longer being used as follows:

  • Click on Config > Attributes
  • Highlight the attribute to remove
  • Click Delete
  • Repeat for each Category being deleted
