Donors can purchase (or be given) memberships at organizations with membership programs. Memberships can either be lifelong (with no expiration date) or can last for a designated amount of time and will have a set expiration date. Once a membership expires, donors may choose if they would like to renew or drop their membership. When a membership is renewed, the donor has the option to stay at their current membership level, upgrade to a higher membership level, or downgrade to a lower membership level. When a membership is renewed, it will be considered for the Renewal Report in Reports > Membership Reports.
Alternatively, organizations may give their donors the option to upgrade or downgrade their memberships at any time during the term of their membership cycle (prior to the expiration of their membership). If a membership is upgraded or downgraded during the term of their current membership cycle, users can use the upgrade and downgrade buttons on the membership record to record these changes. Unlike renewed memberships, these memberships will not be considered for the Renewal Report.
Some users would like the option to mark a mid-cycle upgrade or downgrade as a renewal so that these memberships will be considered for the Renewal Report.
