This issue is caused by DEP introduced in Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1. To work around this issue, disable DEP for Crystal Reports XI.

Option 1:
  1. Go to the Windows System Properties:
    • For Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 right click on My Computer and select Properties.
    • For Microsoft Windows Vista, right click Computer and select Properties. Then select Advanced system settings.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the Settings button in the Performance area.
  4. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
  5. Select the Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services option and click OK.
  6. Reboot the computer.
Option 2:
  1. Go to the Windows System Properties:
    • For Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Server 2003 right click on My Computer and select Properties.
    • For Microsoft Windows Vista, right click Computer and select Properties. Then select Advanced system settings.
  2. Select the Advanced tab.
  3. Click the Settings button in the Performance area.
  4. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
  5. Select 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:'.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Browse for the application CRW32.exe. This file is located in: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Crystal Reports 11\
  8. Select CRW32.exe and click Apply.
  9. Click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
  10. Reboot and then log on as an Administrator and start Crystal Reports.
