Error: The installation of the patch has failed (ErrorCode = 1603) when installing a Raiser's Edge patch

Users report the following error when installing a Raiser's Edge patch fix on the Blackbaud Management Console server:

Error:  The installation of the patch has failed (ErrorCode = 1603)

OR users report the following errors in the Application log of the Event Viewer:

  • The Raiser's Edge - Update 'Display name' could not be installed. Error code 1603. Windows Installer can create logs to help troubleshoot issues with installing software packages.
  • The Raiser's Edge -- Error 1731.The source installation package for the product The Raiser's Edge is out of sync with the client package. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'The Raisers Edge.msi'.
  • The Raiser's Edge -- Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product The Raiser's Edge.  The Windows Installer cannot continue.
This error can occur when the files used to update Raiser's Edge build 796 are no longer present in their original location. This can occur when a user deletes the installation files to clean up disk space, as an example, causing the error to occur and the install to fail. Please attempt the following steps to resolve:
  1. Open RegEdit on the machine where Raiser’s Edge is installed and navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{3ED92977-5FCD-11D3-9293 -00104BD34E29}
  2. Note the Windows path that is reflected in InstallSource (Example only:  C:\Standard\)
  3. Locate the downloaded and extracted 7.9x installation files (for the full install of the Raiser's Edge, not the patch installer) and place them in the path reflected in the InstallSource (Example only: C:\Standard\).  If you no longer have or can locate your 7.9x installation files, download and extract the files again and place the extracted files in the path reflected in the InstallSource (Example only: C:\Standard).
  4. Install patch

 NOTE: Incorrect changes to registry settings can cause serious system problems that may be irreversible without reinstallation of the operating system. You must back up your registry before making any registry changes. We are not responsible for damage resulting from incorrect use of the Registry Editor.
