Error: This constituent is already a member of this membership program and the program does not allow multiple memberships from the same constituent - when committing a batch

When committing a batch of membership renewals, receive an exception error on a constituent: "This constituent is already a member of this membership program and the program does not allow multiple memberships from the same constituent."  This occurs although we are selecting to renew in the batch, not add a new membership.
In the batch, ensure we are not including a member onto the renewal that already has a membership in this membership program.  If so, cancel that person's membership or if there is only one constituent on this renewal membership, select renew the membership in batch rather than adding a new membership.
