Definitions:
  • merchant gateway: The company that takes transaction data from Luminate Online and passes it off to the appropriate payment processor
  • payment processor: The company that takes transaction data from the merchant gateway and passes it off to the appropriate merchant account
  • merchant account: The company that takes transaction data from merchant account and passes it off to the appropriate merchant bank
  • merchant bank: The client's bank
This can become more complicated as some companies are only one of the above, e.g. PayPal PayFlow Pro is a merchant gateway, some are two or more of the above, e.g. IATS is everything but the merchant bank, and some companies like Chase bank can be one or more of the above depending on which products the client decides to purchase. Most of the time the merchant account is also the mechant bank. Luminate Online only works with some merchant gateways.

Note that there are other ways these companies can be referred to. Using the above consistently during communications simply helps with understanding.

One further complication here is that part of Luminate Online product includes a section to configure "Merchant Accounts" and a section to configure "Gateway Accounts". Both sections are a part of the merchant gateway configuration in Luminate Online.

Blackbaud owns the relationship with the merchant gateway. The client owns the other relationships. In the case of a combo company like IATS, the relationship is owned by both.
