Error: RE7.exe has stopped working when launching the Raiser's Edge

When launching the Raiser's Edge on a server that has Data Execution Prevention (DEP) enabled you may experience the following error:
  • Error RE7.exe has stopped working.  Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.
Click on the Details button in the error message and look at the details for the Problem Event Name line.
If the Problem Event Name is "BEX" the issue is related to Microsoft's Data Execution Prevention (DEP). The issue is a result of a buffer overflow or DEP exception.
 
This error can be caused by the Windows feature Data Execution Prevention (DEP) if it is turned on for all Windows programs and services:

Add an exception for The Raiser's Edge program in DEP:
  1. Click Start > Run > type sysdm.cpl > press Enter
  2. Select the Advanced tab
  3. Click Settings under Performance
  4. Select the Data Execution Prevention tab
  5. If "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" is selected, click Add
  6. Browse to C:\Program Files\Blackbaud\The Raiser's Edge and select RE7.exe (Note: This will be C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackbaud\The Financial Edge\ on 64bit workstations)
  7. Click OK to save changes
  8. Restart the machine
