Error: Prompted to update / install patch at every login - when logging into the Financial Edge \ the Education Edge \ Blackbaud Student Information System on workstations running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1

When launching the Financial Edge / the Education Edge \ Blackbaud Student Information System, you may be continuously prompted with the following message on workstations running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1:

The Financial Edge has detected that a software upgrade is available.  The upgrade will be installed now.   This patch has already been applied to this system, do you wish to reapply it?

This is due to the User Account Control (UAC) settings redirecting file system and registry write attempts to the workstation.
We are currently evaluating this issue and will update this article when we have more information.

Alternative Solution:

To resolve this issue complete the following steps:
  1. You must first run Blackbaud application with full administrative rights to the system. This can be done by right-clicking on The Education Edge \ The Financial Edge \ Blackbaud Student Information System icon and selecting the option to "Run as Administrator".
    • If prompted for the Administrator password, enter a user name and password with administrator rights. Apply the update and successfully log into the application. Once completed, then log out of The Education Edge \ The Financial Edge \ Blackbaud Student Information System and log in as a normal user.
  2. If the issue continues to occur after completing the above step but only when double-clicking on The Education Edge \ The Financial Edge \ Blackbaud Student Information System icon, while logged in as the affected user:
    • Browse to C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Blackbaud\<Product Name>\ and rename or delete all instances of the BBUpdate.ini file (32-bit operating systems).
    • Browse to C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Blackbaud\<Product Name>\ and rename or delete all instances of the BBUpdate.ini file (64-bit operating systems).
