The CRecord object has a field called RECORDS_fld_NICKNAME which is a let/get for the Nickname field of a constituent record in The Raiser's Edge.  The following sample VB6 code can be used in VBA or with the API to view/manipulate the NICKNAME for a constituent:
Public Sub Nicknaming()
    Dim oRec As CRecord
    Set oRec = New CRecord

    With oRec
        .Init REApplication.SessionContext

        .LoadByField uf_Record_CONSTITUENT_ID, 96 ''Robert Hernandez's record in RE Sample data

        ''View the ID/Name/Nickname on the record:
        Debug.Print "ID: " & .Fields(RECORDS_fld_CONSTITUENT_ID) & _
                    "  Name: " & .Fields(RECORDS_fld_FULL_NAME) & _
                    "  Nickname: " & .Fields(RECORDS_fld_NICKNAME)

        ''Uncomment below to set/save a Nickname to the record
        ''.Fields(RECORDS_fld_NICKNAME) = "Bobby"
        ''.Save

        .Closedown
    End With

    Set oRec = Nothing

End Sub
