Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. - when editing an Export Definition

In the Marketing and Communications area, you can create Export Definitions for the Marketing Efforts.  Existing Export Definitions can also be edited to create a different result. When going to an existing editing an Export Definition this error is generated:  “Object reference not set to an instance of an object.” 
 
It is possible for this message to occur as a result of duplicate nodes within an export definition.   For example, the following nodes may exist with their own fields:

Constituent Marketing Information 1
Constituent Marketing Information 2
Constituent Marketing Information 3
Constituent Marketing Information 4

In order to address this error, remove the duplicate nodes and add any fields applicable to Constituent marketing information under a single node.
 

Steps to Duplicate

  1. Go to Marketing and Communications functional area
  2. Open an existing Export Definition
  3. Edit, and add a new field to the definition.
  4. Save
  5. Observe error
