How do I query on accounts with no journal entries?

There may come a time when you need to locate accounts that have not had any activity with your organization, whether it is to remove those accounts from your database or reach out to them to try to get them involved. The best way to do this is to create a query to locate accounts that have journal entries and then create a compound query to subtract the accounts that do have journal entries from all of the constituents so that we're left with the accounts that have no journal entries.
First, we'll create a query that identifies all of the accounts that have journal entries:
  1. Click Queries
  2. Click the Base category
  3. Click New Query under the tasks menu
  4. Name the query All Accounts with journal entries
  5. For Starting Query select Category: Base and Query: All Constituents
  6. For Data Return Type select Accounts
  7. For Criteria Matching select Match At Least One Criteria
  8. Under Criteria select Journal Entry Type
  9. Check the box next to each journal entry type
  10. Save and View Queries

Then, we'll create a compound query to identify the accounts without journal entries:
  1. Click New Compound Query under the tasks menu
  2. Name this query Accounts with no journal entries
  3. For Data Return Type select Accounts
  4. Choose Subtract Query 2 from Query 1
  5. For Query 1 select Category:Base and Query: All Constituents
  6. For Query 2 select Category: Base and Query: All Accounts with journal entries
  7. Save and Preview
