Error: The file could not be downloaded. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. – when downloading planned marketing effort segments to csv or xls

In Marketing and Communications, a Marketing Plan can be created.  From that plan a Marketing Effort can be generated.  When following this process, calculating the segment counts, and then attempting to download the segments to CSV or XLSX, the error is generated.
Download and install the latest Service Pack which contains all fixes from previous patches. If you are running an older version, download and install the latest version and then the patch.
