This error is a result of a transaction being processed through one merchant account, when the donation campaign has since been directed to another merchant account. The original transaction cannot move from one contact record to another because the original merchant account on the transaction is no longer valid with the donation campaign.

One method to resolve this error:
  1. Look up the donation form and donation campaign for the existing transaction record
  2. Identify the original merchant account for the transaction in a Transaction Details Report
  3. Alter the Merchant Account of the same Donation Campaign back to the original Merchant Account
  4. Attempt the merge again
If this method is unsuccessful with the same error or a timeout, try the following method:
  1. Refund the transaction "offline"
  2. Merge the records
  3. Set up the same gift on the surviving contact record as "offline" for your reporting purposes
