Unable to log into The Raiser's Edge or The Financial Edge or The Education Edge after installing Windows Update

On Tuesday, August 13, Microsoft released updates for Windows 7 and higher which, when installed, can cause self-hosted users to experience and inability to log into one or more of the following applications: Raiser’s Edge®, Financial Edge®, and Education Edge™ .  Note: These updates do not impact Blackbaud Application Hosting.

Errors received when attempting to log in may include: 
  • No error message appears and the application simply fails to open
  • "Error during start up - The following error occurred while validating the ActiveX DLL objects: Invalid procedure call or argument" 
  • RE7 has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem.

Running a repair or uninstalling/reinstalling the application does not resolve the issue.

Microsoft has released fixes for this issue for the following Windows versions. Corresponding release notes (below) are updated with the resolution KB numbers.

Note: To identify the version of Windows you are currently using, go to Start > Run (or Win+R), type WINVER, and press Enter.

 Blackbaud has tested a subset of the released fixes and can independently confirm that on-premise and self-hosted customers that apply the relevant fix above, should now be able to access Raiser's Edge®, Financial Edge®, and Education Edge™. We recommend that customers on one of the above versions of Windows should quickly apply the corresponding patch and get back to their normal cadence of security patching.
Please note that these fixes are released as an "Optional C" update which means customers/users will need to manually install via the Microsoft Update Catalog or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
